Default In honor of Bill's mandolins bday

I watched this video today and never noticed the side binding on his mandolin before. The black purfling line seems unusually thick. What do you think?

I don't know why the image rotated. It wasn't that way???

When you click on it, the enlargement is right side up.

His mandolin has been worked on and probably messed with several times. In the early days, the binding looked any other on a side-bound F5.

Yes, I'm aware of the many repairs it has had. I just don't think I ever noticed the black line so prominent.

(After the fire poker incident in November 1985, Bill's F5 received a major repair and its second facelift (new head stock overlay). The first facelift happened before the fall of 1980. (BTW none of these facelifts resembled the original for some reason.) That post 1980 facelifted F5 is pictured on the cover of the Master of Bluegrass record:

Apparently, at that time, Bill's F5 was in need for a neck reset – which Bill never allowed. Was the instrument opened at some earlier point and equipped with different binding?

That's a good question. The binding certainly doesn't look like the normal side binding. The black line seems wider and is in the center of the binding instead of closer to the sides.

Way to ruin the monetary value of a Loar F5 - all those mods...
