Default Grover 409 vs Grover 309

Lately I have seen a couple of references to "Grover 409" tuners. I chuckled a bit thinking the posters had confused that monster v-8 engine with our old standby, the Grover 309. Today I discovered that the Grover 409 is indeed a new model Grover tuner.

So, can someone do a quick compare and contrast between the 309 and 409 Grovers?

I did notice they have a worm over and a worm under model for the F style.

Unless something has changed in the last two weeks the worm over tuners will turn backwards because they used the same worm gear as their worm under. To me they aren't a worm over option.

I have both the 309N's (on an A5, worm over, normal tune) and just got the 409FVN's for an F-style (worm-under, normal tune), replacing the worm-under reverse-tune Schallers that were on it. I got the 309's about 18 months ago or so, the 409's within the last 2 months. Mike's right about the 409's in my shopping around.

Supposedly the 409's have been reworked & improved, I think by Lynn Dudenbostel. I don't notice much of a difference in that they both work great. I really like 'em.

I'd check with Jan & Dean, they thought the 409 of theirs was fine.
