F Trester, Movement #1 (from Three Movements for MO): PMO
At the recent (June 26) PMO concert in Rhode Island, we performed the first two movements of Francine Trester's remarkable (and very beautiful) "Three Movements for Mandolin Orchestra". Fran is an awarding winning composer from the Berklee School of Music with a lengthy catalog of works, including many for classical guitar (here is her website). The piece is unusual in the mandolin orchestra literature for its extensive use of counterpoint/"call-and-response", the equal nature of the parts (particularly for the lower strings -- mandola, mandocello, and guitar), and frequent metrical shifts. I commissioned Three Movements from Fran in 2006. The PMO performed it back then several times, including in France and the Netherlands, and recently decided to revisit it. Here is the first movement:
