Thread: Tunes in "F"

    Default Tunes in "F"

Watching a livestream where the lack of tunes in "F" was mentioned. I couldn't come up with many. There's "Miss. Waltz" by Monroe & Frank Wakefield's "Waltz in Bluegrass". Anyway, I wrote one that I managed to find a decent recording of. It's a basic blues-type thing with (hopefully) a good hook.

Are you specifically speaking of Bluegrass? Are you limiting your comment to Bluegrass? You don’t state that but I get that impression. Anyway, if you’re not limiting your comment to Bluegrass, one that I like is Robert Earl Keene’s version of My Home Ain’t In The Hall of Fame

Although some folks say it's in Dm, ol' Bill's Lonesome Moonlight Waltz is in the key of F.

Rick Skaggs along with many others do Rank Stranger in F. Not exactly sure where the Stanley Brothers did it. I think it ranged from somewhere in the cracks between E and F and sometimes as high as F#

Loads of traditional fiddle tunes in F and, dare we say it, even in Bb! I am talking about Scottish tunes here.

I really enjoyed your tune. Nice and bluesy. Fishers Hornpipe was usually played by fiddlers in the key of F. I tabbed out a mandolin version years ago. It lays out very nicely in F.

Most old fiddle books show Fisher's Hornpipe in F, though modern players have pretty much moved it to D.

I always play Erie Canal March in F, from the original flute music. However, I play it on the concertina, so NMC.

Scottish and Irish. Two favorites, Planxty Drew and Planxty Wilkinson, are both in a handful of flats. First made known to me by the playing of Johnny Cunningham.

I have recently become addicted to perusing tunes from Polig Monjarret's big green book "Folk Music of Western-Brittany". Most everything in there is in two or three flats. I think I have seen a few in F.

Playing in flats is a wierd mind set, but once I get used to it, it gradually gets easier. But going back to the world of G and D is always a relief.

The Beeswing Hornpipe is one of my favorite tunes. While it’s in Bb, and not F, I think that’s close enough

I play Mark Knofler's "Romeo and Juliet" in F.

I don't think he does, though.

Yeah, I was thinking Bluegrass. Should have been more specific.

Yeah, it was David's livestream where the comment was made. In addition to Bluegrass or Oldtime, I was also thinking of original tunes but lots of good comments about trad and other stuff. Anyway, this got me going through my tune list & I discovered that I've written tunes in every key except for C#. The inevitable conclusion is...I need to spend more time playing in C#.

Mississippi Waltz is a wonderful tune in F major that is rarely heard outside of my house.
My favorite F minor tune is Gnossienne #1 by Eric Satie. Four flats (count 'em). Written for piano, it is heard on Michael Melford's album "Mandolin Fantasy" from 1976.

Sometimes erroneously titled as “Bee’s wing” hornpipe. Beeswing is a word I learned from a Sherlock Holmes story called Abbey Grange. It’s the precipitate in some red wines like port. Not a word one encounters very often, but a fun one and a curious choice for a hornpipe title.
