My mother once asked me if I was still playing that damn banjo. I have given up telling her it's called a mandolin.

When I moved from Alleghany County to Nelson County (VA), no more than about 80 miles, and about 30 miles from Lynchburg, when I first got there there were native speakers with accents so different that I could barely understand what they said!

Well mando - obviously "hand or with the hand" in Latin, implying the right hand plectrum as opposed to a bowed instrument ?
I wonder if all names for a Fretted lute tuned in 5ths are from the Latin root? Lute, Flute, oh dear.....

the ola- olin - olino stuff, haven't a clue.
