Default Mandolin session in Edinburgh's Waverley Bar

The session in the Waverley Bar, Edinburgh, hosted by top Scots singer George Duff, is usually quite busy. However, last weekend there was just myself, the wonderful fiddler John Martin and top mandolin & banjoist Iain MacLeod. We also happened to have mandolins with us, not the norm, as you can't usually hear the wee beasties in a big session. Tom Ogston took some film, some of which might be of interest. There are other videos with us playing tenor banjo and resonator tenor guitar, but as this is a mandolin cafe, I just put up a few of those with slightly more mando content.

Just watching your videos after having a great wee session last night in The Royal Bar, Innellan, Kevin. We are there every Thursday evening. Last night we had accordion, three fiddles, bodhran, a couple of guitars, small pipes and I had my octave, for the very reason you mention of being heard in the mix. We play a lot of West Coast tunes here as well as quite a selection of fiddle tunes from various sources.

Your session seemed like a lot of fun there and the three of you blend so well together. Hope all is well with you, and it is so good to get out playing again.
I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order. - Eric Morecambe

Yes, good to get the tunes going strong again. We've been up and running since the back end of 2021. A few of us have had C19, but not from being at the bar. It's pot luck these days, and Edinburgh is heaving with tourists, with the kick started Edinburgh Festival imminent; it will only get busier!

Yes, a spontaneous and fun afternoon of tunage, wandering through old ones at will.

    Cheers, Kevin

These videos are great Kevin, and thank you for posting them. I've never been to an Irish pub and hope to one day, but I feel like these videos take me there.

Thanks Cheryl, glad that they were enjoyable for you. And I hope you get to one of the great session pubs in Ireland one day, The Cobblestone in Dublin or Tigh Coilis in Galway. We are actually in a Scottish bar in Edinburgh, Scotland here. There are a few Irish tunes scattered here, I admit, but they are fun to play, and we have many great Irish musical friends too. Here's some Scottish pipe marches to offset the jigs!

    All the best, Kevin Macleod

How cool. I was just in Edinburgh that weekend (probably around the corner from there if the bar name is related to the train station). We met some old friends there and got shown around so it was a busy weekend. I will have to try and look this place up when/if we get back!

The Waverley Bar is on St Mary's Street, south side of the High Street/Royal Mile, session on Sundays 3-6pm

Thanks for these fine sets and for reminding me of the first hornpipe, which you call Daniel O'Connell's. It was written by Frank McCollum of Antrim and called 'the Home Ruler' in honour of his wife, nothing to do with O'Connell the politician although people now assume it is. The second and third tunes (My Love is in America) are normally played as reels in Irish sessions. Apart from having to rename the set it is perfect!

That is great Kevin, and the mandolins very audible.

I wonder will pubs like the Waverley be having weekend sessions during the festival, or will it all be given over to Fringe shows?
We occasionally used to stay at the Travelodge down St Marys St, and drop in for a nightcap at the Waverley on the way home.

Keith, you just walk up Jeffrey St from the station, and it turns into St Marys St when it crosses the Royal Mile.

Just had time for a quick listen Kevin. It's cool to see the Cretan mandolin. Different sound, I think.

Yyes, that's what I liked about it, and its a cedar soundboard, flat, ebony fretboard, and a deep sapele body, zero fret, Grover tuners, really nicely set up, great sound, all good and different from the Sobell/Tarans I enjoy too.

Unusual guitar! It’s a “Northworthy” - the headstock inlay reveals the builder - Alan Marshall. Alan retired from building guitars a couple of years before Covid struck.

Yes, that's well spotted- George Duff has been after one for years, and finally found one in a recent private sale - on the Isle of Lewis!

I think there’s one in Australia. Alan decidd to deliver it - personally!

Mine is totally unique; it’s a 5 string fretless bass.
