Thread: Nick's Front Porch Mandolin

Larry Muth two-point. Sitka top, maple everywhere else. Will have custom finger rest, James TP, Rubner tuners. The pics are pretty fuzzy so you probably can't tell the inlays are diamonds, not dots. Should be here end of next week. Hopefully I'll recover fully enough to do it justice.

Congrats on a great thread Nick! Lot's of fine tunes shared and will inspire others, I'm sure. Get well soon! I'm in my 9th month and still not right, but I can play. And nothing will keep us from that! Nice Mando... can't wait to hear it.

Thank you very much, Frank and I continue to enjoy your great thread. I'm 6.5 months in & the problem is now pretty much isolated to my left thumb. As I mentioned, I severed the radial artery & the tendon to the thumb. My wrist is pretty much back to normal but the thumb continues to be an impediment to full recovery. But you're right...ain't nuthin gonna keep us down. Us old guys got keep on keeping on. While the body may be failing, the mind remains engaged.

One piece back, Sitka spruce top, James TP, Rubner tuners, wide nut. So far I like it a lot. The neck feels perfect, a shallow "U" shape that I prefer. Has that new mandolin sound but I can hear the promise. G & D strings are already pretty robust. The string spacing will take a bit to get used to. I'm coming from an Eastman with its notably narrow neck to 1 3/16. Feels like a football field of room.

Quick update after a couple of weeks - I really like it. The sound has already changed just in the short time I've had it. I can hear the potential in this instrument. It sounds great right now but I think it will be even better in a year or so. I've gotten used to the wide nut spacing. The only thing I wished I'd done differently is to have asked for a greater radius on the fingerboard. I think that would be better with the 1 3/16 width.

One more update. I had a minor accident and wound up cracking the MOP nut. I had it replaced with bone. So far I'm not noticing a great deal of difference.

The Muth two-point turned six months this week & I'm really starting to hear it changing, almost on a daily basis. I've been told that 6-12 months is the period where one can expect to hear the greatest amount of change. After that the changes become smaller & more difficult to track. So, I'm looking forward to the next six months. What I'm hearing right now is a really good balance. A kind of creamy, non-harsh tone, especially up the neck. Clear notes well above the 12th fret & a nice thumpy bass on the bottom. I chose some upgrades that ran it from a base price of about $2700 to just under $3500. It's a lot of mandolin for that amount of money (Canadian dollars, too).
