This 110 years-old mandocello plays great and has a wonderfully deep, throaty tone. It was restored by Frank Ford in 1996 for good friends who ran a small music store in Southern California. Frank chose French Polish for the finish despite the additional hours it required, as this instrument pre-dates Gibson's use of lacquer by over a decade. Despite damage the original finish had suffered before Frank began his restoration, he didn't have to do any crack repair and it remains crack-free today. Since the owners were musicians who played it, the adjustable bridge was chosen as it allowed string action to be changed easily. Somewhere in its earlier life the original Gibson tailpiece went missing but thankfully the original Waverly tuners survived and work just fine. This comes in the deluxe Harptone case that was special-ordered for it, and much as we love original Gibson cases from this period we have to admit this contemporary case offers far better protection.
