You are essentially dropping down a fifth and increasing the volume by approx. 10% so the difference is not huge. BUT- I want a very lively, inspirational, responsive mandola, not a stiffer big mandolin shaped object with overly thick plates. Mandolas do tend to like larger air cavities. If you go too small, you'll miss the mark.
Also- are you going for an F hole style mandola or an oval hole? I prefer tone bars for the F style but almost always a light X brace pattern for an oval.
