Original Mandolin Tunes

Hi all. I started a thread for my original music over on the "Videos, Pictures & Sound Files" sub-forum called "Nick's Front Porch Mandolin". I'd love to hear what kinds of things other folks are writing, too. Anyway, none of the tunes are copywrited so if you hear something you like, feel free. Thanks.

I usually write with a guitar on my lap. I think I've only written two with a mandolin on my lap. Good additions, for what it's worth.

Both are Americana. One I haven't recorded yet. One, "Maggie Brown," doesn't have a mando solo. The mando just carries a repeating background motif, like wallpaper. It's the first song on this page: Dreadnot

Here's one that, um, popped out after breakfast - first take for both parts and a working title. Probably could do with being faster tempo, and definitely needs more practice.

Nice Dave! The first one sounds Celtic-y to me. It would sound great with a fiddle & some kind of squeezebox.

The second one is cool. There's a kind of jazzy, latin, bluesy mix that's pretty appealing. Did you do the backing tracks yourself?

I recorded the backing parts (guitar and uke) except for the drum track, which is a loop in the recorder (Zoom R8).

The first one will probably get some more development - it's basically a notebook entry at the moment. It was probably inspired by playing some of the melodies in the New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs.

The second started as a guitar part which fit with a bossa drum loop, more or less. The mandolin part here was an improv (really, 3 improvs on different tracks).

That's a nice, pleasant groove, easy on the ears. I like the harmony at the end.

Hi Nick,

I think there are a bunch of us pre-occupied for whatever reason with instrumentals. (Maybe there sb a dedicated section for instrumentals in this forum.) Anyway, for me, I feel my original melodies are stronger than my lyrics. I was recently wondering if/why there aren't IBMA/Grammy categories for bluegrass/americana instrumental albums. Anyway, I've posted this here before but I just did a project of multiple genre (Celtic, Bluegrass, OT, even folk/pop) tunes you can hear at https://daveberry.bandcamp.com/. My goal was to document the melodies I've been writing on for 20+ years and make it as high quality recording as possible (I've since learned that they call it broadcast quality). Ivan Rosenberg did a wonderful job mastering it.

i like the tempo of After Breakfast as is Dave. Lost Feather started out sounding a motown tune (I've got Sunshine). good stuff.
