    Default Birdland Breakdown

Tryin to learn this coolest of John Reischman tunes, from his Peghead melodic mandolin music course, oh these boys are playin' circles around me,
the Tony Rice tag is probably because they heard it from "Still Inside" or the "58957: The Bluegrass Guitar Collection" album, same recording on both I believe.

Oh that's not me in the video -
I have the melody down, can't quite keep up with the Tony Rice Unit recordings, but pretty close.
I don't quite have my head around the chord changes and rhythm yet.
Reischman uses 4 tone chords with an index finger bar over the two high strings, not used to those so much and I find myself trying to squeeze 4 fingers onto the fretboard, doesn't fly all of the time.
I'll admit I was in a bit of the mandolin doldrums, but this tune has brought me back around, I really get excited and happy about learning it and trying to play it.

I love playing this, and Big Bug too. When I first started playing, in our first session my father suggested we play this…lucky I found Birdland Bounce which was at a manageable speed. He learned them both from John R himself so we play it off John’s handwritten tabs.

Great tune so I'll raise you this one with twin mandolin harmony:

    Sweet,
not sure who's who but the guy without the hat (Matt?) is getting some sweet tone out of what looks like a Collings?
My melody speed is decent now but I still can't do those Reischman bar chords cleanly
I'm hoping that tune gets "Jerusalem Ridge" status and more young pickers play it often.

I used to play Birdland Breakdown with my french band "Wondergrass". Here in 2007 at the second La Roche Bluegrass Festival.

That's so funny. I just signed up for the John Reischman melodic mandolin course as well and it was in large part to the Birdland Breakdown portion. Great tune!

Speaking of the Peghead courses, I also did the Aaron Weinstein course on "Chord Melody" and I thought it was excellent!!

did the same - signed up for the Reischman melodic tune class, in part for Birdland Breakdown, the other cool one is "Indian Arm" though I recently learned "Salt Spring" and was able to pull it off at a jam.
Great class, I have not looked at the Weinstein yet, but did start the Joe K Walsh Jazz class, so far quite "heady" as opposed to some of the more mechanical approach other teachers use.

Cool! Yeah I'm definitely looking forward to more of the John Reischman course. Regarding the Aaron Weinstein course, if you're into chord melody at all, this is just great stuff. For instance, one of the tunes he covers is "I Got Rhythm" and I've always enjoyed playing it but Weinstein provides a ton more possibilities to make the melody more interesting.

    Really cool stuff!

I really like this groovy version from Wintergrass 2024, played at human speed!
