    Default Embergher 5 bis copy

Here are some pictures of an Embergher model 5 I recently completed in Queensland Blackwood. The curl in the grain is more broken than in maple, so it was hard to get the same continuity of pattern across the staves, but it has a nice golden glow. I decided to leave out the pickguard because I couldn't bring myself to stick something acoustically inferior over so much of the soundboard. It was built from Lorenzo Lippi's plans, with additional information on Embergher construction from Alfred Woll's excellent book and elsewhere.

After bowl was together, with scrapers of different radius, then sandpaper on dowels.

Are you planning to replace the staves?

No I always try to make the least modifications when repairing, so I'll file the edges at 45 degrees, glue a small patch under the hole, which I can do from the outside and then glue a suitable piece of maple onto that from the outside.

I might try to shape it before gluing to avoid too large an area to colour match afterwards.

That's the plan anyway but I have been procrastinating for some time but it is after all just a mandolin, albeit a beautiful and expensive one.

Thank you for the sandpaper on dowels tip. :-)
