Default Yet another string winder thread

I misplaced my normal cheapo guitar string winder, so I went to my junk drawer and found a couple I haven't used for a while. The yellow Dunlop was just like every other cheap guitar Click image for larger version.

ID:	203380winder, but the black Fender winder had two different sized openings. I always assumed the openings were for Kluson style and the bigger one for Grover/Schaller type sealed tuners with bigger knobs. Just for fun I tried the smaller opening on my mandolin and it worked and still was able to clear the adjoining tuners.

Question Re: Yet another string winder thread

I got a small electric motor (Not Sonic) screwdriver, it's quite underpowered for driving screws, so I thought ...

Does anyone make a peg winder with a 1/4" steel hex* bit on it's back, to use one of these drivers (or screwdriver handles)??

*(because a magnet holds it in)

I found a couple at Sweetwater on line, one by MusicNomad and another by D’Addario. I don’t own one of these but I’ve had a Dunlop Turbotune for years that has the 1/4” hex, I just use it with a battery operated driver.

I've got a MusicNomad blue winder which I prefer to the types shown in the top post.
Less fiddly to put over the knobs and doesn't slip off so easily.

Never use one, just technique when putting on new strings. Been discussed several times here. Slotted headstock is the only time I use one, and for me that is on a guitar.

I just use the cheap plastic ones but narrow the button pocket by cutting it on the bandsaw and reglueing so it's just wide enough to accommodate mando tuner buttons. This way the winder doesn't hit the neighboring buttons while cranking.

The D’Addario combo string winder/string cutter also has the cross pattern where one works great for wider guitar tuners and the other works great for narrower mandolin tuners.

What do you consider "too many"?

"Too few" windings is a problem, also. I try for 2-4 windings.

Okay, will admit to using a "Frank's Crank" purchaed from Gryphon. Definitely worth it to me. Usually only do 2 winds on my instruments, but it does a nice job helping. Plus, it's a joy to use.

The wooden model that The Mandolin Store used to sell is not bad. That's my backup.

Just got used to using a winder on guitar and it's carried over to mandolin. Funny that I never did on electric bass, which is also where I usually had the most windings too. Go figure.
