I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.
I was going, but COVID finally caught me.
It's the best event of its kind in the NW; a beautiful spot and great bands and jams. Our band Porcupine Ridge opened the Saturday night concert a few years ago and played at the Sunday morning Gospel session.
But sorry, I am committed all this week to a Classical Mandolin Society in Kalamazoo; I hate to miss Tygh Valley, and some great friends I haven't seen in 3 years. But I live in two musical worlds and I will be playing mandocello in an orchestra of 100 mandolins; that's pretty cool too.
Say hi for me and my wife to everybody at Tygh Valley!

My wife and I will be there. We’re still rehearsing our ‘sing for your supper’ tune and looking forward to a Molly B’s breakfast. Mmmmm, bacon.
I’ll also be defending my Golden Ladle trophy in the soup contest

I may try to head up there with my 3 year old for a night. We will see how crazy the week is. Haven't been before and would love to taste the defending gold ladler's work.
We’ll be there along with quite a few other pickers from central Oregon. It truly is a special festival.
This is great news for me. This is my first year of mandolin and it’ll be my first time at Tygh Valley. I’m an old guy with a hat and a mandolin so you’ll be easily able to spot me in that crowd. I’ll be sure to pass along your Howdys, Jim.

You’ll blend right in with the other old guys at the festival also wearing a hat and playing the mandolin.
Yer right, I blended right in! I spent several hours there today (Friday) and I’ll be back tomorrow. It’s a bigger gathering than I expected and I really enjoyed myself. My wife suggested that I borrow a trailer next year. I was surprised that it seemed that today was more about catching up with old friends than about playing. One guy said that he and many others had been going there since the fairground trees were twigs. I’m sure tomorrow will flip the conversation-to-music ratio and it’ll be joyous cacophony throughout. The open mike was fun and I loved the Soup for Songs.
Hey, there, Bill, which was your recipe? I hope it was the tomato basil because that one edged out my other faves.

Now that I have better internet service I can sadly say my soup failed, as I forgot to add some valuable spices. Still was eaten up. Rumors that I was caught ballot stuffing in the contest are fake news, as I was caught returning the excess ballots. You’d think I’d be better at cheating by now.
Additionally I met a very nice group of folks playing swing tunes they’d collected over many years, mostly unfamiliar to me. It was great fun, if beyond my pay grade. The lady who did many vocals was also no slouch playing rhythm on her 1886 Martin Style 2.

The ballot picks were not guarded by a mother hen so I’m sure there was fraud. We’re surrounded by banjo players, after all.
I had a pretty constructive time hanging back and playing quietly along with Edgar Loudermilk, with One Button Suit and with the scramble bands. I’m still not skilled but I learned enough there to make my trip worthwhile. Later I wandered among the RVs and wished that I’d had a chair along. I’ll be back next year, to be sure! Maybe a few events through winter will guide me to harmony.

[QUOTE=Kenny;1879596]. “It’s a bigger gathering than I expected…”
The gathering seemed bigger this year as it appeared about 1/3 of the RV’s there were workers temporarily living on the fairgrounds while constructing a nearby solar farm.
Another great Tygh Valley festival. Lots of fun jamming till the wee hours Saturday night.

I had a blast at my first Tygh Valley Festival. I spent most of the time chasing my kid around while he climbed on the Tractor and Old Fire Trucks on the grounds, but did get a chance to sneak out and pick tunes Saturday night and got to catch most of the main stage acts on Saturday. Lot's of great mandolin picking by the featured bands. I definitely hope to come back, especially with the opportunity to do some more pickling and less 3 year old wrangling.
