Default "Lost Soul Behind Bars" - NMC

I hope this is the right category for soul music, if not maybe the moderators can move it.

I stumbled upon this article about "The untold story of Upheaval, a prison band [in Wisconsin] that recorded one of the most sought-after soul singles of the 1970s"

NMC, but really interesting and some good music and old video links. Pretty sad in a lot of ways, too.

I've found myself interested in American music history lately, and wanted to share.

Wow. These guys are good. A very well written article too. I grew up in Detroit with the Motown Soul scene and IMHO, this stuff is just a good. I have a friend that teaches violin in a Minnesota prison here, where I supply the violins. It is not an easy gig. But the guys have an interest in music and teaching is quite rewarding. More folks should know about these programs.
    A good 'find' Sue. Thanks

Great article! Great program they had, too! Thanks so much for that, Sue.

You might want to check out "Music From The Big House" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1742081/), a documentary in which the blues singer, Rita Chiarelli, stumbled across Louisiana's Angola Prison, where she ended up as a performer and musical volunteer working with prisoners. Angola was one of the prisons visited by Alan Lomax on his song-collecting field trips.
Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."
Lomax, Alan, The Land where The Blues Began, NY: Pantheon, 1993, p.14.
