    Default Hurricane IAN coming

It looks like a major storm will make landfall close to Tampa for the first time in over 100 years. Then it is headed our way and then onto Georgia and South Carolina. Just want to wish all my fellow mandolin pickers in these parts the best, keep those mandos dry!

It looks like Journeybear is already feeling the effects, Steve, I hope you are well.

Take care Charley. Here's a link to a visible (daytime) satelite loop for Florida:

You can toggle the settings at the top. And this page has multiple other satelite products:

Thanks, Charley. I did all right. The storm passed well to the west of Key West, and I'm 30 miles further to the east. Plenty of wind and rain, but no big deal. Dumb luck, really. Reports from KW have mentioned lots of flooding. Hope it's not as bad as Wilma in 2005, when 3/4 of the island was under at least some water. Put a serious damper (really) on everything, particularly the music biz. Clubs stopped hiring live music for months. That's what led to me getting a day job at the Shipwreck Museum, which was a good if unexpected bend in my life's path. Got to play music at work - any way we could attract attention and lure customers was encouraged by my boss. Yes, playing music at my day job, a musician's dream! Plus got introduced to the wonders of the conch shell, which has led to so much fame and fortune, much more than the measly mandolin ever did. Anyway, I hope it's not that bad. They were saying Wilma was a century storm, though many compared it to Donna in 1960. I won't know until I go into town on Monday, though hopefully recovery will be well underway by then. I've never been so glad to have made this move. Well, except for when I actually moved.

And we folks in the Tampa Bay region are thanking the good Lord for having dodged another bullet. We were "ground zero" yesterday. We still have a long way to go, but we still have power (for how long??). The rain tolals have yet to be determined and who knows how much property and tree damage will occur, but compared to 100 miles south of Tampa in Ft. Myers, Naples, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, etc., we're doing ok.

Best of luck to everyone affected by Hurricane Ian,

I saw a photo earlier where the storm sucked most of the water out of Tampa Bay, leaving a giant mud flat.

Checking in from Central Florida, Daytona Beach area. We got swamps, we got storms. Going to have a lot of displaced alligators and snakes after this.
    This is a big one.

After many months of oppresive mid 90's degrees, it's a surprisingly cool 69 degrees today with tropical storm "breezes". Seems like summertime in Florida is finally over for 2022.

Whoa! Looking at the tracking I thought St.A was far enough away that it had been spared. Sad to hear that.

I'm concerned about my sweetheart, living in the country well east of Sarasota. The eye got as close as 45 miles from her, and made landfall as a Cat 4 about 55-60 miles away, them pummeled the area for more than half a day. No power, no phone, landline or cell. She's made of tough stuff, and so is her house, but I'm still worried, with big trees nearby. Can barely wait to hear from her.

You guys in Ian's path have the attention of many, many of us around the nation. Our best goes to you all. Most of all, be safe. But also, we hope you and yours are able to avoid property damage and loss (especially your musical instruments ).

Trees, parts of buildings and signs, and other debris all over the place. Signs that aren't down are bent over. High water in places.

Oh yeah and a couple of bridges were knocked out that were sole access to the islands on the other side of them, aside from boat or helicopter, that is.

Yeah, I saw a mention of Sanibel's causeway - broken into five sections. That'll have to be completely replaced. Here's a list of all the bridges.

Blowing and raining pretty hard in Myrtle Beach right about now. Nothing to risky, but I am hoping my peach tree doesn't get uprooted, it's getting thrashed around pretty good. Mandolin are safe, glad to have the day off, sipping coffee, browsing the cafe (ok and classifieds) while listening to Matt Flinner Trio. My heart goes out to all that were hit so hard in SW FL.
