Thread: Harmony F-style but not a Batwing

Default Harmony F-style but not a Batwing

I recently bought this mandolin from a fellow who traded for it in the 1980’s. The only identification is the Harmony logo on the headstock. There are no marks whatsoever inside the body or anywhere else. I’m curious as to how old it might be and if it had a model number. Any insights on this mandolin would be greatly appreciated. I had a friend who is a luthier set it up and it sounds and plays very nice.

Circa 1980-2000, imported and the only thing it has in common with the Harmony instruments made in Chicago is the name. That brand name was one of many applied to imported instruments. Harmony closed in 1975. The name has been bought and sold at least two times since then.

Top is not carved but rather pressed, or simply an induced arch (no ridge at scroll). Most likely laminated top and body (thin plywoods).

Could be serviceable as a learner instrument, but not valuable and not sought after by most.

Thank y’all for the information. I am just learning to play so it should serve its purpose as it holds tune and actually sounds pretty good. I will definitely ask more questions and investigate deeper on any future mandolin purchase.

Has some of the signs of an Aria from 1980s/1990s. I reckon poor quality although some of the Arias were Ok as beginner/intermediate.
