    Default South State 48 2022

    Anyone heading to the South State 48 November 3 – 6, 2022 (https://californiabluegrass.org/south-state-48/bands/)?

It was a blast last year and I'm really excited to head back again! The room block is sold out at the hotel, but there's plenty of rooms not in the block and in nearby hotels if you didn't get something booked already.

If you're going, LMK - I always love meeting cafe folks in person!

    Hey Matt,

We're coming, we will be there probably sometime before noon on Saturday and leaving sometime Sunday. We have a courtyard view 2nd floor balcony room for Saturday night -- not sure exactly where it is on campus, but I expect we'll be able to see/hear jams happening in the courtyard.

Hoping for nice weather again like last year!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

It'll be fun Don! Always look forward to a jam with ya! Ideally I'll get there Friday morning and stick around for most of Sunday, but now that I gotta fly there instead of drive, timing isn't as fluid as it used to be

Looking forward to picking a tune or two with ya!

I just got the official word that I'll be hosting the mandolin workshop at the South State 48 again.

Topic this year will be "Playing to the Chords: What to play when you don't know a song". Any questions / comments from the group (whether you're attending or not) would be appreciated

Good, Matt, I was wondering if you'd be up for that this year. What day and time will you be doing this workshop?

The workshops likely will be in the same space they were last year - that conference room south from the main jamming lawn.

They haven't gotten the schedules out yet, so I'm not 100% sure on timing. I asked them to give me a Saturday time though as it'll be easier on my schedule

    wooo!

    Coming up next weekend... Anxious.

Matt, any firm word on when and where the workshop will be? If we're on campus in time on Saturday I might want to participate.

Hey Don - I just got the word from them last night - see the attached. They are all in the Conference Room. My event will be at 1pm Saturday. I've got a ton of pre-workshop material I'll be emailing out to anyone who registers here https://mattcbruno.com/mandolin-workshop/

Great, thank you for the update!

I registered (it seems to want a password for the pre-workshop materials).

I hope to be on campus by then...

Great! I haven't finished working everything up on the pre-workshop materials, but should have that wrapped up by Monday 10/31 the latest. I'll be emailing everyone that registers when it's up. Honestly, this ended up being a deeper topic than I anticipated, but I feel I have a good direction to take folks from just knowing the key through taking a melodic style break. The workshop materials should help highlight the path by providing some exercises and ideas to help practicing the necessary tactics etc.

    Looking forward to seeing you!

    Great! As mentioned, getting anxious...

Btw, I posted a song on your "Uncommon Songs" thread. Diana and I have worked up an arrangement of it.

    Hey Don,

Just a heads up - I posted the workshop materials today. A little later than I hoped, but you can get those here. https://mattcbruno.com/2022/11/mando...to-the-chords/

Thank you! I've browsed through the materials today, will try to scope in on them more seriously tomorrow. I've in particular noticed the great songs you've chosen as examples.

I have to say, I'm not a great candidate for a serious tech review of all of your great documentation. I'm mostly an autodidact with minimal formal music training who has found ways to move forward and have fun with the mandolin (and other instruments), despite adhering to a large number of non-standard methods. I'm sure you'll get a kick out of a lot of them that I routinely use.

But I can read standard English, so I'll let you know if I see any obvious problems in that realm.

    Thanks again!

Hey all, just a note that the workshop is today at South State 48 at the Carlsbad By the Sea hotel in the conference room at 1pm PT. I'm going to do my best to live stream at www.facebook.com/mattcbrunomusic but if there's connectivity issues, I'll likely just run a separate zoom call for anyone that couldn't make it live.

    Hope to see y'all there!

Yea, we joined a jam in the conference room until late. We're still on campus until 3pm Sunday if you have any time left.

I am sure glad you and Steve got together so you could try his new mandolin!
