Coffee in the morning, mineral water most evenings at home. When the Finnish band is practicing, it's usually Bell's Two Hearted Ale. Just has become a staple for a couple of us. Picked up the tradition from some other musicians in "da UP".

For me, it depends on when I’m playing.

Weekday night after the wife and kids are asleep, I’ll have a tea on the side.

Weekend morning or afternoon, I’ll have a fresh cup of coffee.

Weekend evening, a Woodford Reserve bourbon
Scotch from Islay! In order: Port Charlotte Heavy Peated; Ardbeg 10-yr old; Lagavullin 16-yr old; Ardbeg Uigeadail; or most any other scotch from one of the distilleries (8 or 9, depending upon the current status of the Ardnahoe distillery) on Islay, Warm and complex. Unbeatable imho.

Over the years there have been many liquid refreshments involved in keeping my creative juices flowing, for sure. Currently that seems to be coffee - kind of comes with the territory, the timely territory, that is. I'm not about to keep on with the whiskey, rum, vodka, cognac, and what-have you. Somewhere along the line I came to understand that the music was in me (thanks, John Sebastian) not in the bottle, however those libations may have helped lubricate my liveliness and diminish inhibitions. But if I'm in a relaxed situation, by mself or with a friend or few, most of the time a wee bit of bourbon and/or a good beer will do just fine.

The cultural climate of Key West tends to encourage drinking. Some venues are more proactive than others about plying musicians with their wares. It seems like they like to have performers drinking so customers will get induced to do the same (and pay for their drinks) so it becomes one big party, and the place makes money. In some situations it can be a substantial part of the pay for musicians. One band I was in, we had such a good draw, venues would give us buckets of beer, and Stella Artois was our typical choice. I'd have to be careful not to overdo it - loose is good, sloppy is not. One place was so pro-drinking they'd let me and my then-partner drink whatever we wanted, as much as we wanted. That was not good for the guitarist, who was deeply committed to whiskey. At our regular gig at Capt. Tony's, he was one of the bar's best customers, putting away a quart of Jim Beam, shot by shot, and paying for it, during the course of a four-hour shift - but here at Irish Kevin's, he would get it in a water glass so he wouldn't have to stop for shots mid-set. This was during the 10AM - 2PM shift, by the way. I was aghast, but soon enough decided to join him - why miss out on the fun - though my drink of choice for this venue was cognac. Hey, if it's free, night as well go with something good, and something they rarely sold was fine with the bar.

Lately I'm doing one gig a week, Sunday afternoons, at a pretty high-end restaurant with a back deck, and we each get a shift drink. I'll take mine at the end of it - 4PM just seems like a better time. They have a bloody Mary that's a meal - not just a celery stick and lemon wedge, but a strip of bacon, a skewer with a jumbo shrimp, colossal olive, and tiny sweet gherkin, a hot pickled string bean - seriously, a meal. They charge $20 for this extravaganza, but they are all right with one on the house for the music. And it really is a substantial part of my pay - that's both good news and bad news.

Definitely depends on the season, time of day, and my mood! Nothing like hot coffee for mornings, or wintery afternoons. In the evening, my mandolin and I tend to partake in more whiskey than is strictly healthy. We're getting into the colder months soon, so it might be hot buttered rum or hot toddies shortly.

At our weekly pub sessions I am confined to the dreaded alcohol-free beers as I am driving and bring three other players along with me. How's that for amazing self-sacrifice! Once home again, it will be a single malt - tonight an Isle of Jura, I reckon. I really enjoy the session and I really, really enjoy getting back home after.

I heard John Prine singing about vodka and gingerale. So I tried it. I liked it! No nine mile long cigarette.

That's getting into Dark And Stormy territory - substitute dark rum for vodka (and ginger beer for ale), and you're there.

Vodka is probably the #1 alcohol for mixing - closest to neutral flavor.

Diet Pepsi. I prefer the plastic screw-off cap bottle, in case I knock it over it won't make a mess.

During the day: coffee, tea, or water. Evenings, usually an IPA, although now that I’m back in the Great Lakes region (States), the winter season may call for a stout.

Manny's Yum. Can't get it here in Bend though. So for me it's either an Athletic Brewing (non-alcohol) craft brew, a Dr Pepper or a Jack Daniels on the rocks
