I just bought this oval hole Mando. The sound of J74 is weak on it.
Have you some suggestions for this F4, I play mostly jazz chords and jazz melodies and improvisations ( Davis Grisman , Don Stiernberg, etc ... ) ? Thanks

Charley
A bunch of stuff with four strings
Is it weak on all strings? All positions?
Weak means sustain? Tone?

Various Basses
Amplify?
0.2p: In general: Heavier strings allow you to pick on them harder
(thicker pick?)
and your playing harder will drive the soundboard to put out more volume.

I have a Weber Vintage oval hole and use medium phosphor bronze GHS on it and it sounds great. I tried Martin monels but they sound muted. I've had it for a while and it is a keeper for me.
Try out some Curt Magnan strings. I prefer the PB mediums on my F5. The Magnan Monel strings were a tad bright but as we know all mandolins are not created equally. Do look around at various makes. If the top is a bit heavy the 41-11.5's will drive it better. Enjoy the search the best strings for your instrument are out there. R/
I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...
Hey, if it's used, be sure it's set up for you properly. String height (bridge), nut and bridge slots aren't dampening the strings.
