    Default Who is Oscar?

All the musicians in Thelonious Monk’s “In Walked Bud” (lyrics by Jon Hendricks) are pretty readily identifiable. Dizzy, Byas, etc. O.P. I guess could be either Oscar Pettiford or Oscar Peterson.

But who is the “Oscar” who plays a mean sax?

No sax on that version of In Walked Bud. The Wikipedia article on Monk's album Underground gives Charlie Rouse as the sax player on that album. He was the regular sax player in Monk's quartet throughout the sixties. I saw that group at Monterey on the 1963 festival.

Not sure where you're finding "Oscar", but yeah, should be Oscar Pettiford or Peterson, or maybe Oscar Brown Jr. in that period. But probably you're thinking of an earlier recording of In Walked Bud (that is, Bud Powell), with Don Byas on sax plus Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet) and likely Oscar Pettiford on bass.

I think the original post means who is the Oscar referred to in the lyrics. I don’t know though.

    Regards,

I read that the lyrics were improvised on the spot by Jon Hendricks. Maybe it was a joke or a mistake? In some versions Oscar is replaced by Byas in the lyrics.

Right, sorry if I was unclear on that. I should have said "All the musicians named in Thelonious Monk’s “In Walked Bud” ...
"The paths of experimentation twist and turn through mountains of miscalculations, and often lose themselves in error and darkness!"

    Dizzie, he was screaming
Next to O.P. who was beaming
    Monk was thumping
Suddenly in walked Bud and then they got into somethin'

    Oscar played a mean sax
Mr. Byers blew a mean axe
    Monk was thumping
    Suddenly in walked Bud
And then the joint started jumping

Every hip stud really dug Bud
    Soon as he hit town
    Takin' that note nobody wrote
    Putting it down

Thanks, everyone! I missed the point— should start listening to lyrics, but I've never got into that habit.

The scene imagined would probably be happening back in the forties. So Kenny Clarke or Max Roach could be in there drumming.
