Thread: SNL Mandolin break

    Default SNL Mandolin break

Is anyone familiar with the tune Brendan Gleason played on the recent SNL ?
He credited Barney McKenna of the Dubliners (Banjo)
Some opinions have been critical, My self, whenever I can hear Mandolin playing wether it’s Brendan Gleason or R.E.M. it’s a good day.

It was mentioned in the thread under "General Mandolin Discussion" Chief O'Neill's Hornpipe.

I'd say "alternatively" rather than better known. I've been at Irish music for over 40 years and have always heard it referred to simply as "Chief O'Neill's", w/o the hornpipe or favourite, attached (that was to help with the identification in my post). Most people I've run across aren't aware of the "favourite" but technically, that's correct.

Here's the thread, which features the clip of his monologue. While he uses the mandolin more as his sidekick in order to spin some humorous quips than as an instrument (he never gets all the way through the tune), it's clear that he can play, and I'll bet it is actually his mandolin.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

It's his. He plays the same instrument on a ripping set of reels in performance with Mike McGoldrick and Dirk Powell on a youtube video someone posted. And I've seen him play it on others.

He had quite an interesting life. He also was a merchant sailor for a little bit as well as a school teacher out west somewhere. Truly one of the biggest contributors to keeping ITM going here. On top of the tune collections he amassed, he wrote a lot about the music and the foremost musicians of the time. A remarkable man indeed.

As Chief of Police, O'Neill employed people who were good Irish musicians as policemen just so he could learn tunes from them.
