Default African mandolin on fb marketplace

I understand that the banjo has it's roots in Africa, I was unaware that the mandolin did also.
This one's cool but man, that neck bow!

I think that is an Andugu.

Not to nitpick Jim, but I think you mean that you were surprised to find that there were (and are) some mandolin-like instruments made in Africa.

The banjo has its roots in Africa. But it’s way wide of the mark to say the mandolin has its roots in Africa. Hope you see my point.

I think you missed Jim's point by a wide margin. His post was dripping with sarcasm, drily addressing the misidentification in the listing's title. It's clearly related to the banjo, not the mandolin, despite what the seller said.

Sadly (for our purposes), the listing is gone. But I remember clearly it was so misidentified, and thus worthy of some scorn.

Here to help. Although we could take Jim to task for not providing the listing for posterity, as he is so dedicated to doing for photos of amusing items under discussion. After all, that IS the source of jocularity here. Or not ...

But hey - what's wrong with me? Sticking up for something banjo-related? Heavens to Murgatroyd!

Perhaps it should be pointed out that this is not 'banjo'-related, but rather, is a primitive harp.

But it's possible that the mandolin does have roots in Africa. European chordophones can be traced back to the oud, which was imported to Europe from the Middle East and North Africa (the oud is still very popular in Egypt).

It's said that oud (ud) or barbat is progenitor to all lute-types (chordophones)

Ah - yes, indeed. Thanks for pointing that out. Regardless of its gourd body, there's be no fretting those strings, would there?

Anyway, the humor arises from it erroneously being called an "African mandolin," whatever its true identity and functionality.

BTW, Jamie's conjecture that it may be an adungu could hold water. The link brings one to an essay with photos of harp-like instruments from Uganda, with what look like wooden bodies with skin stretched over them, and more strings, 5-9 of them. This is similar if more primitive.

I would think that the earliest stringed instruments arose in Africa or Mesopotamia but wouldn’t really consider either the birthplace of the mandolin … but yes, you have a point about roots. I can see that.

And the word itself. L'oud in French / Italian morphed into "lute".
