    Default New Mandola

Well, yesterday I pulled the trigger on a new Gold Tone Mandola. I wanted a new mandolin that was different from what I already have, and one that I know how to play.

I like mandolins a lot, but the high notes (1st string) are not my favorites. Maybe I’ll prefer the mandola’s lower ones.

I plan to use it mainly for playing Irish songs. I have a bunch of ‘em,

Same here, although it does depend on the mandolin and the strings.

I have a mandolinetto with nylon mandolin strings and even the high strings are kind of docile.

Got my new Mandola on Sunday - three days early! I played it a lot yesterday. The strings are very tight, and I thought they would be tough to play, but they played just fine. A Prime Tone round 1.5 pick (my usual mando pick) seems to work okay so far. I put a strap on it maybe temporarily. So far so good.

Well, so far the tight, tight strings have loosened up, and the frettin’ has become easier. I’ve picked my pick; it’s a Dunlop Prime Tone Sculpted 1.3 small triangle. Picks well, and it’s tremolo is good. Still some vib noise, but that’s me I guess.

I’ve bought some lighter, D’Addario strings and some 2 mm picks. I bought the picks because I already have a Dunlop Delrin 500 2 mm and like it pretty well. I don’t usually use that heavy a pick, but I like the way it feels and sounds. I’d really prefer a bigger pick like the Prime Tone 1.5 mm though.
