Thread: custom case quest

    Default custom case quest

I don't think this exists - and if it does, I probably couldn't justify the cost. And 3rd strike, I probably asked this before. But every couple of years I get the idea in my head and ask around again just in case it's come into existence.

I can find violin/mandolin cases and I can find violin/viola cases, but a multi-instrument case for a viola and a mandolin doesn't seem to exist. 3D printers have become more mainstream and more and more people are starting their own online business where they're making specialty items on request - so...

Does anyone make, or know of anyone who makes, or could customize a case to hold a mandolin (tear drop) and a viola (15.5")?

On the home page, the Crossrock Case Co. is getting into the double case market. You might contact them and see if they will make one for you.

Viola size is the least standardized and many viola cases have some way to compensate for the wide range of body sizes. This complicates the manufacturing. You can have custom cases made by a number of companies. You just may need to pay a fair amount for what you need.

I have been in communication with Crossrock for a OM case. They have been very helpful. No guarantees, but a custom wooden case for my OM will be under $200. Custom fiberglass, around 1k. Waiting to hear if they can modify and an existing product...

The Crossrock option above sounds promising if they can do a custom case for under $200. The problem may be customizing an existing case. I think viola cases are generally longer than violin ones. Otherwise I would say even buying a violin/mandolin case and customizing the interior for the viola might be a possibility.

Frankly, I live outside a city and mostly go to jams and gigs by car so I rarely would use a double case anyway. I do have a double fiddle case to carry two differently tuned fiddles when playing for dances.
