Default Changing the strings on my new to me 2nd hand Gilchrist

I have some D"Addarios, some Curt Magnan and some Ernie Ball and a set of DR"s
I suspect I will get around to several brands before I decide on what I like on the Gil, but where to start ?

Mangan Monels are a great place to start.

Well I have used all but the Ernie Ball strings. The other three manufacturers are all quality makers. Your style , technique and aural preference will let you know what string to use. . I play with Curt's PB's these days on a Model 5. Enjoy the journey. R/

Another vote for Mangan Monel (medium) on a model 5, especially if you like the old school sound.

Can’t go wrong with the classics: EJ74s

I've used all those on my instruments. My favorites are Curt Mangan, followed by DR. But I like sweet tone, sustain and volume.

Anyone living in England might like to try out hand-made Newtone Strings. They are excellent, not too expensive, and can be ordered idividually or in standard or customised sets. Unfortunately, since Brexit it costs a bomb in extra taxes to ship them to the EC (Gemany in my case).

I'm reminded of reading AutoGuide forum and someone asking which tires to put on his XKE
"I play BG so that's what I can talk intelligently about." A line I loved and pirated from Mandoplumb

I'm seconding the EJ74s. They are fairly accepted here as a baseline. Personally, when trying something new, I will toss a set of EJ74s on first. Play through them and then check the difference with the new set. I've had a few sets that sounded, in theory, like they should have been perfect but weren't as good as EJ74s (on my mando)

    Try the standard first.

why would you waste time changing strings on that dirty old second hand thing haha.
I've used EJ74s forever but tried out the D'Addario XT strings per Frank Solivan and have to say, I like em a lot even if they are a tad more $. Just seems brighter on my Gil A. of course, YMMV.

My suggestion: Commit to a high level string-Mangan, D'Addario-and use them through a few changes, until you become very familiar with your Gil's voice. Then, try
one of the other manufacturers or alloys, and see what changes are made. I have used D'Addario phosphor bronzes, coated and not, on mine since new in '95; but, I am going to try Mangan Phosphor Bronze mediums very soon. Why not?

I didn't particularly care for the Mangans on my Gil. I'm using my last set of EXP74CM now. I'm going to have to change. The D'A NB were pretty good, but I'll be trying the XS next.
