Not 100% sure on Bovida brand but most are a mixture of water and propylene glycol. Some humidifiers absorb the mix in a superabsorbent polymer (diaper absorbent), typically sodium polyacrylate.

So is it safe and inert?

Propylene glycol is RV antifreeze and is generally considered food safe. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe for all finishes.
Sodium polyacrylate is pretty much inert.

Whoops, I should have looked it up before posting. Boveda packs do NOT use propylene glycol. They are a mixture of water, potassium citrate, and xanthan gum. Also food safe stuff. Probably less likely to harm a finish than glycol.
