Default New Neil Young Documentary Tomorrow Only

Just found out about this. A never before released two hour film from 1971 focusing on the recording of the Harvest album. Web says it was filmed at his N Cal ranch studio, plus has footage from concerts during 1971. A review I read mentioned there was lots of acoustic guitar content. Since there may not be any actual mandolin content, mods may want to move this, hope I'm not committing an offense by posting here.

It's only showing Dec 1st and 4th (tomorrow, Sunday). All the showtimes in my area seem to be in the afternoon on the 4th, the cost of my ticket was $16+$2.

Google Neil Young Harvest Time and click on the result that says official site and you can see where (if) it's playing in your area, and you can buy a ticket through that site. Many seats were available when I bought mine Saturday morning.

I"m guessing it will eventually be available to stream, buy or rent, but the big screen big sound theater version will probably not be repeated. I definitely want to experience that.

Would love to read comments from anyone who goes to see it.

Here's a quick heads-up: My local art cinema tells me it's screening this today - December 3rd. They've done this before, on occasion, for opera mostly, but also other genres. They are set-up with satellite links and whatever other technology to display simulcasts. I saw a show by Elvis Costello a few years ago, in which he was backed up by Larkin Poe, the blues duo of Rebecca and Megan Lovell; as many of us know Rebecca is an accomplished award-winning mandolinist who spent years playing it in The Lovell Sisters - and there's your mandolin content. You're welcome. To be sure, I don't recall if this was a one-time broadcast or a one-week stand of a film in distribution, which happens much more often. I mention this so folks can check their local or area cinemas to see if they're offering it. Here's the link - which tells me it's running here tomorrow as well. And it's screening also next weekend, depending on your location - like two places around Miami.

PS: That show I mentioned is now available on DVD, called "Detour." So if you're willing to wait ...

Wow, I'm surprised there's an art cinema in Key West; when you subtract the tourists, it's a pretty small town. There's not one in the Tampa Bay area that I'm aware of, but Denver has three and half, and the two metro areas are about the same size.

Sure, but once you subtract the tourists, there is quite an eclectic citizenry here, and that includes a fair amount of pretty wealthy people, as well as many artistically-minded citizens. There's a multiplex out in the shopping centers and The Tropic downtown. After Hurricane Irma tore off part of the Regal's roof, the Tropic did a bang-up business for a few years devoting one or two of its four screens to more mainstream fare - savvy business move - until the multiplex got resurrected. They're back to its typical function as a cinema rather than a movie house.

Anyway, that link will bring anyone anywhere they want to go, or nearby.

Hope my post didn't come off as derisive of Key West, that wasn't my intent. I know what you mean, I spent three years in a world famous ski resort in Colorado in the late '80s, same thing.

A funny aside re that experience: they had stopped doing it by the time I moved there in '86 but a friend who lived there earlier said that one of the two single screen theaters in town would show a porn film late on Saturday night once a month during the off season when the few locals left in town were bored to death. The funny part was that the projectionist, while the house lights were still up, would make comments about who was in attendance as they walked to their seats. Also, once the film started members of the audience would yell things at the screen. I'm sure alcohol was involved....

No worries. I just figured you were underinformed, since people who don't live here are subjected to a lot of marketing by the local business cabals, which play up the party town image (admittedly, well-earned), and also rumors abound. But the town also has been welcoming and supportive of the arts, performing and physical, so there's a lively artistic community. Many practicioners are feeling the squeeze, financially, so the scene is slowly deteriorating. Yet since hope springs eternal etc., musicians and artists and actors still come here to follow their dreams and make them real. It's got a LOT going on for a town its size. My hometown of similar size has nothing to match it - except for buffet restaurants, of which there are none here. So there's that ...
