Default Back and Forth Between A7 and D, D7 Chords

When playing a 2 finger A7 chord, which are your D D7 chords of choice? I'm playing "Open My Eyes, That I May See" in G. One line is A7, D, A7, D7. The 2 finger D is not ideal in this scenario! I'm set on the A7, but am flexible as to the D and D7 (3 finger) chords.

I normally play 3-string, or even 2-string chords.

    A D-chord that I like is 7-4-0-x

In this situation , i might play:

    A7 - 6-5-0-0 (or x)
    D - 7-4-0-x
    A7 - 6-5-0-0 (or x)
    D7 - 5-4-0-x

That way you are just moving the A7 shape down one fret.
Just depends what harmony you're looking for.

Sherry, which A7 are you playing?
I like the sound of 2-2-4-0, 2-0-0-2, 2-2-4-0, 2-0-3-2 (I know 2-2-4-0 is missing a G but I use it a sometimes in that context). It seems a little more natural to me than going 0-2-4-0 to 2-0-0-2.

    There are so many possibilities.

And remember, no need to play a “two finger” D chord, how about a one finger? Leave out the F# and play 2-0-0-x (A-D-A) sounds great. So many ways to play that progression! Experiment with all you can think of.

I'd be barring at the second fret, alternating between D7 2432 and A7 2243. It's three fingers, but only two are shifting between the chords. Throwing in D 2344 still only requires three fingers while leaving that barre in place.

My instruments are well set up. YMMV.

I'm now playing "In the Highways" with D, G and A7. I never would have thought of playing a one finger chord, but the one finger D works! What other one finger chords are doable???

If you don’t need the upper register, 0-0-2-x works for G it has the whole triad (G, D, B) leaving out the extra high G note.

If you learn to barre two strings with one finger, you can play a sort of modal A chord with no third, 2-2-0-0 (A E A E). Sometimes the A chord sounds fine as opposed to using the true dom 7 chord, experiment.

depends on the tune/song, but I would play runs of A/A7/D/D7 chords as bar chords on 2nd fret or as partial bar chords on the 7th fret. it really depends on the chords before and after.

I think the question was what chords can be played with one finger though, and it just so happens that D, A & G can all be played with one finger as described. It‘s really coincidental to me that Sherry happens to be working on a song with a D, G, A7 progression. I’m not suggesting that the best way to play the tune is playing one finger versions of D, G and A5 … only encouraging her to experiment.
