Default Mike Compton on a Loar F5

Here's Mike pickin' & singin' with Joe Newberry in 2017: https://www.google.com/search?q=Comp...id:FVwOYKz2ZYY

Although known for usually not being all too fond of Loar signed F5s (except for Crusher), Mike obviously enjoyed playing a vintage F5 in this case. Anybody knows the background of the story (provided there is one)?

No, Hendrik, me not in the know.

    Happy new year for y´all.

I saw MC in France last year. He played his Gilchrist F-4 (long scale), which won me a green beer that I still have to collect. I do like MC playing Duff (wink, wink). There are some clips on youtube (Carter Vintage clips) where MC plays LL mandolins and he seems to like them just fine. It´s probably just about what they seem to deliver.

I do not know when the clip was recorded, what the mandolin was about et.al. I would like to know though (just like I would like to try out that CJ Lewandowsky greek LL F-5) and a certain Fern that I know a guy I know has.

Hope to see you down the road this year.
    Olaf

Thanks, Olaf. Indeed, hope we get the chance to pick some together this year. That Fern is in great shape!

That above performance was in 2017. Also, may I ask: What do you mean by "long scale" F4? To my knowledge, all (Gil) F4s, though having a shorter neck, have the regular 13.9" F5 scale.

The video offered would be a good tutorial for any that play non-bluegrass music and are curious about how to play in the key of F
    too many strings

That is what I gather. But does an old Gibson F-4 not have a shorter scale length than an F-5 scale?

The scale on F-4's is the same as it is on old F-5's.
Both have a scale of approximately 13 7/8".

Mike and Joe are recording a new album this week. Mike says it's going to be "different".

Odd that Mike plays this Loar so far over the fret board (I'm aware Monroe did occasionally). Afraid of too many trebles?
