Default Mic comparison: Four mics on an Ellis F5 mandolin

    Hi Folks,

I had some spare time in my studio so I thought I give it a try: Four microphones on one F5 mandolin.
The mic choice may seem a bit odd: A large condenser mic (Neumann U67) and a small condenser mic (Schoeps CMCMK4) compared to two attached mics (DPA4061 omni pattern and Audio Technica ATM 350).
But: Neumann U67 and Schoeps MK4 are go-to mics on many stringed instruments. I wanted to evaluate how mics for live-on-stage-use compare to these praised studio mics. The ATM350 is what many players use, and the DPA4061 is my personal favorite attached mic.
The piece in the beginning of my vid is an original named "looking back".

Let me know what you think.

    Greetings,
    Robert

Can't go wrong with any of those mics. My 2 cents, I like the Schoeps the best. U67 lacks definition on this source. Shoeps has the dark, smooth low end of the 67, but is detailed in the midrange and highs. The DPA accentuates a lot of midrange to my ears, to the point of being "honky" at times. ATM350 is just not in the same league as the others, and sounds so to my ears. Sorry Audio Technica lovers.

Great playing and test. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks. Definitely fun to analyze the differences. I am going to listen later on studio monitors.
