    Default RIP Vivian Williams

Vivian co-founded the Northwest Folklife Festival and was one of the most influential old-time and bluegrass musicians in the Pacific Northwest. The last time I spoke to her was at a Seattle Mandolin Orchestra concert in her assisted living facility last year.

This is a very informative obituary — a lot of stuff in here about Vivian that I didn't know.

Oh, how very sad! She and Phil were great musicians and field recorders. RIP.

She also was important in preserving some of the Scandinavian-American music that might have been lost. Both with Joe Pancerzewski (LPs and tune book) and Jeffrey Anderson.

Got to spend some quality time with Vivian in the years just prior to Covid, as she usually stayed at our house after playing a local contra dance. She'd usually close a dance by playing big john mcNeal at a wild pace. I recall her teaching me the great Mιtis tune “grey owl” while drinking a bellyful of balvenie one night, and then spending the next hour going into great detail about the colorful history of Saskatchewan fiddle tunes. I will miss her. she always made me feel that simply playing with her made me part of the great tradition we both love.

I just saw this thread. Very sorry to read this news. I only knew her through her website and emails. She and her husband did so much for traditional music.
