I’m glad you posted this. I see the tail piece they use takes loop end strings. I’m planning on stringing this OM tuning GDAE and might have to use gypsy jazz strings to get the thicker gauge.

Planning on doing jazz/blues playing with this National.

Here is a sample of the tuners for the build. Really excited to see the bright German silver finish with these tuners and block inlays!

I’d be tempted to run Thomastik-Infeld flatwounds. You won’t notice the lack of volume!

I’m not terribly sure what the sets look like at that scale. I might try to order a custom set from cafe regular Martin at emando.com:

Do you think gypsy jazz strings with have enough tension to drive the cone on the National?

I’m no expert, but with my National RM-1, I find that it takes less string tension to drive the resonator than it does the wood top of an archtop mandolin.

Here’s a question I have about 23” scale and fifths tuning.

How will closed fingering scales and more advanced chords (7ths, 9ths, Sus…) translate to the longer scale?

The standard stings for GDAE on a 23” scale 12 20 30 45 should be available as singles with loop ends?

Quick note: ball end strings can be easily converted to loop end. Use a set of needle-nose pliers to un-twist the end a bit and the ball-end falls out. That way you can use whatever strings you wish.
