I couldn’t say “best,” but he certainly wasn’t leaving anything on the table. Always liked Cannonball’s playing; imho few can play a ballad as well as he did. “Something Else,” recorded about the same time, with Miles, is a fine LP.
And speaking about heresy, as much as I like Trane, his playing always sounds slightly flat to me. As in, a few cycles out of tune on the low side. I’m sure that it’s my ears, but I don’t hear it with anybody else, and I almost always hear it with him.
