Thread: Regal Bowlback- Interesting

    Default Regal Bowlback- Interesting

This mandolin has a few issues but it is interesting. Now, that inlaid logo was used on the archtop troubadour guitar made in the late 30s. Were these inlays made earlier for these mandolins and Regal used up some spares- I don't know as I would think the mandolin is somewhat earlier. That tailpiece is interesting- has it been modified with those strings going through it? The cover is also novel but others may have seen it before. Anyway, it needs work but it has some style but not $6,000 worth- but then you will not be paying much for this one!

Thats one way to handle broken tangs on a Waverly style tailpiece. For posterity:

Yes, a novel approach to that problem. With eBay, it is easier now to get a replacement tailpiece, I would reckon but it is a workmanlike solution.

Judging from where the mandolin is, I would reckon that it has dried out a fair bit in its life. My brother used to live in Riverside which is close, so I would imagine that from what I remember of the area, it would be a great place to worry about the moisture level- or lack of it! Those cracks on the top seem to be evidence of this.

I wonder if that tailpiece cover is a handmade replacement- maybe done by whoever drilled the holes to bypass the broken tangs.
