    Default The North Shore

I am in the middle of the Peghead Nation "John Reischman teaches melodic tunes" course and working on his waltz "The North Shore" from his "Up in the Woods" album.
I am familiar with the tune but never really tried to play it other than noodle around over it.
I hear a lot of people ask about right hand technique guidance, and although not for beginners, this is it.
John talks about and demonstrates "measured tremolo" and goes heavy on moveable double stops, and hearing this I remind myself why I become obsessed with the mandolin.
The tune itself requires a very relaxed right hand, just trying to make that sound my right hand has already left the realm of tightened stiffness.
So if your somewhere in intermediate level but are looking for right hand guidance, I would check this out.
John said he was influenced by Monroe's "Lonesome Moonlight Waltz" but the picking on "The North Shore" is much more fluid IMHO.

John mentioned in his book of transcriptions of "Up In The Woods" that this tune was written looking out at the North Shore mountains after John heard that Monroe had died. Love this tune and it's connection to Monroe.
