Default seeking large rounded picks, bigger than Golden Gate

Hi all, I (often but not always) like rounded picks like the Golden Gate style but they are kind of small in my hand. A large triangle like a Primetone is a better size but the standard Primetones are too pointy, as would be say a Clayton triangle. Some of the Wegens are good.

Is there an affordable (=losable) pick that's big and also rounded? Not one that costs more than $25 / piece like an Apollo or BC, though if you think there's a perfect one out there, let me know.

Mike Compton's Tater Bug picks are a step in the right direction.

    Thanks,

    Neal in NY

The Primetones come in either rounded or pointy - the pointy ones are also too pointy for me.

Have you tried the Fender 346 shape? Rounded triangle, almost the exact shape of the BC CT55.

I get mine in Extra Heavy mock-tortoise shell. Like you, I wanted more gripping space (as my hands adjust to RA).

The Fender 346 Extra Heavy are just about as stiff as the CT55, but they do wear slightly more over time. I'm using the first one I started with almost a year ago, at this time it just sports a nice custom bevel on my picking surface. I have bought them in 1/2 gross (72) packs for around $26(US), but they may be available in smaller packs now.

Link to discussion of these picks in the Cafe':
Anyone compared Fender 346 EXTRA HEAVY with Blue Chip CT55

I like the Wegen M200, Prime tone 1.5 mm, or especially Gravity Gold Axis shape XL size.

Hi Don, thanks for this suggestion, we'll ignore the wisenheimers above.

Re: Fender 346's, is one corner more rounded than the bottom, which looks as as pointy at the Primetones?

I did get some rounded Primetones but they seems a little small to me, I wish I had more to grip.

I just ordered some Dunlop "Americana" picks which look a little more rounded too.

I do really like Mike Compton's taterbug picks. Now, if Wegen made that shape, that's be awesome.

    None of this is mission-critical.

    Thanks all.

It looks in the Fender 346 images like the lower corner is a sharper corner, but in the hand they are all the same.

    Here's the 346 shape:

I've compared them back to back with my wife's BC CT55, the shape is just about identical.

Am not sure a Fender 346 is going to be much bigger than a Primetone. Have attached a quick photo. Didn't include a Blue Chip, but the size is about the same. Hopefully this can help you with the search. The white unlabeled pick is Wegen M series. The white Dawg is the old style

And to make it more confusing - here is another photo with current Dawg, Wegen top row. Bottom row Primetone and BC

Yes, which is easy for me since I can't play anything with round picks.

Knowing nothing about the subject, and also being cheap and not a musician, I made lots of picks from available scraps, but liked to have the thing long enough to socket in the middle joint of my forefinger, so about 45mm long (small paws). They stay put with very little grip. Did break down recently and buy some assorted picks, and sort of see the things the rest of you write about - differences!

I'm holding a Clown Barf round triangle and a Primetone round triangle in my hand right now. Primetone is ever so slightly larger.

I can feel it when I hold them both together in my hand, but holding them one at a time I don't notice a difference.

And still saving my nickels & dimes & bottle caps & breakfast cereal box tops for my lifetime mandolin.

Hi Kymando, that sounds great. I like less expensive picks and I've picked up some good ideas here.

Something between the Dawg/Golden Gate roundedness and a standard triangle point is really a sweet spot. I like Mike Compton's "tater bug" picks and hope the gets them more widely distributed.

    Thanks all.

Well the search continues. I'm going to try the Dunlop "Americana" rounded picks you see here:

    https://www.zzounds.com/item--DNPAMERIPICK?siid=169982

and in a surprise entry, turns out Taylor guitars makes a semi-rounded triangle thick pick that looks like it'd be good for mandolin.

My goal is find something I really like that's not so expensive that when I lose it I'm bummed. This is my approach with pocket knives and nice pens, too. I want a little better than the cheapest disposable thing but not so high-end that I worry about losing it, because I will, in fact, lose these things.

The Americana picks are quite small. Possibly smaller than Golden Gate, but I did notice GG has a larger triangle pick that I want to try. Sending you a PM.

I see there is a larger (?) version of the Americana out there:

    https://store.banjobenclark.com/coll...icks-pack-of-3

I have some of the small round ones but I don't care for the tone. Very dull/muted to my ear. Perhaps you could round off on corner of the larger Golden Gates to get what you are looking for:

    https://store.banjobenclark.com/prod...31603340574767

I'm going to order one of these soon to see if it is a good stand-in for the old formulation ProPlec, which is my favorite all around pick. Unfortunately I only have 1 left. The new style ProPlecs are very different, more like the Dunlop Americana. Much less clarity.

I guess the lesson here is that if we find a pick we like we should buy a lifetime supply. It's just a matter of time before the bean-counters decide they need to save 2 cents per hundred thousand units by changing the formula.

Hi all, yes, was a little disappointed to see the Americana round picks are smaller. They're basically same size and dimensions as a Golden Gate or Dawg pick.

I'm getting over You Know What and it really gave me a whuppin', so haven't tried some of the new picks I ordered but I'll report back when I do.
