Default Ceccherini bowlback with 2nd soundboard?

I had a look at a large collection of vintage bowlbacks over the weekend. One of them was a Ceccherini with an odd-looking device inside: a thin plate of wood with three small feet that looked as though it was meant to be attached to the soundboard, much like a Virzi tone producer.

Apart from the Gelas and similar French mandolins, I wasn't aware of a device like this being used in a bowlback. Anyone ever seen such a thing before?

    Yessir.

Ceccherini made both single and "double top" models as part of his standard fare.

    Very well made instruments.

Numerous discussions (and photos) of them in the "bowlbacks of note" thread.

    Have a look there.

Our great friend, Martin Jonas, is our current resident devotee of the Ceccherini instruments and often has posted videos playing his.

I have a very nice Ceccherini bowl, but, alas, it is only a single topped one.

Fair play to you for finding one on this side of the Atlantic.

Both the Ceccherini mandos I've had came with the double soundboard. Delightful chime-like tone, unlike any other Italian mandolins I've had.

    Great photo, Bruce! Thanks...

These are hard to get good representative photos of.

Yours clearly shows the relationship of the top brace to the "other" Ceccherini top.

This isn't the time and place to do it, but the Ceccherini / DeMeglio connections have long seemed worth exploring / clarifying further.

BION I have one, too. It actually seems that the double tops are more common than the single ones. I can’t prove it but my gut says yes.

They certainly are on this thread.

Mine might have had a double top. Maybe it fell out.
