    Thanks Perry - that's an excellent 4 min of teaching/learning.

    Something I find useful when improvising over this same box pattern, especially when starting out on a solo, is to put in phrases from classic blues like Ray Charles Hit the Road Jack, Milt Jackson's Bags Groove or Nat Adderleys' Worksong. To my ear they always sound good and give me something to build from.

    For me, the mandolin's sliding tremoloed doublestops are the element that replaces bends.
