Default Thile on CBS Saturday Morning today: what are the mandos?

I don't have television but my bro told me that Thile was on CBS this morning and he (my bro) sent a couple photos of Thile with two different mandos, on an A (f-holes) and one an octave? (or cello?) with an A body. Anybody know what either or both of the mandos are?

    Thanks.

Can you post the photos? The Video Linked in #2 is one of the Loar signed Gibsons, I'm pretty sure.

I think that he was playing his AL Smart mandola on the two tunes that I saw.

Oh, and Chris was playing a very nice looking Flatiron octave mandolin as well as the Smart mandola.

Very cool to see him up there with the humble Flat Iron, more and more pros are including mandola (as subtle as that was) tunes in thier sets, I hope its a trend,

(to the tune of Age of Aquarius)

When Chris Thile plays the mandola
with Joe K Walsh and Sierra Hull

and C will be the key of choice
and altos voice will fill the hall

this is the dawning of the age of the mandola
    the age of the mandola
    a mandola a mandola

As the rain falls on the rooftop
and the wind howls through the night

I sit here picking on my mando
in the dim and flickering light

here I’m yawning with my odd instrument
    the odd instrument inspiration
    inspiration, inspiration!

When Thile capos the octave mandolin
with Sarah Jarosz and Stuart Duncan

and G will be the key of choice
and sweet harmonies will start to ring

this is the dawning of the capoed octave mandolin
    the capoed octave mandolin
an octave mandolin, an octave mandolin!

Thile has performed with both of those instruments for many years, the Smart mandola going back at least to Why Should the Fire Die era (Somebody More Like You) and and the Flatiron even further, Smoothie Song.

    Clip from 2014 though:

In that “Smoothie Song” video it looks like they have Metallica’s bass player on upright. Kind of cool.

Just did a Google search - yes that is Robert Trujillo on bass in that video. Although it's not his playing on the tune. Further searching found that Nickel Creek and Metallica had the same management at that time.
