Thread: Looking for 10 string tailpiece

Default Looking for 10 string tailpiece

    I am building a 10 string cittern.
It is always a challenge finding a tailpiece, other than a Allen.
Does anyone make them? Under $100?
    Thanks in advance.

There are super cheap ones like these: https://www.browndogbanjos.co.uk/ash...fix-5264-p.asp

    and these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/403648949...3ABFBMou7szf1h

Sadly I don't know of anything in between!

I think this may be your best bet: http://www.allenguitar.com/tpcs_mr-10.htm

oops! I just re-read your post: “other than an Allen”. Is there something wrong with the Allen?

there used to be some German makers that made 10- and 12-string tailpieces.

I have two custom 10 string instrument's - a 17" A4 mandola and 25" F4 mandocello. Both have this Allen tailpiece. For some inexplicable reason you want "other than Allen"? Cost? Nothing is cheap when it comes to custom instruments.

Been working great for many years. You can go with a proven tailpiece or take your chances.

Nothing wrong with an Allen. But it is a little pricy for my project. I like the looks of those handmade brass ones you see on Irish and UK instruments.
I only said "other than Allen" because I am familiar with that model (and have used it on several instruments) but was looking for something handmade.

Can you provide a picture of those “ handmade brass ones you see on Irish and UK instruments”. Maybe someone here makes similar tailpieces.

    Handmade, inexpensive, custom. Choose 2.

Or machine a piece of brass and bend appropriately.

Being a retired machinist, it doesn’t look that hard to make. Get some brass and go for it. It would be a piece of cake on a CNC.

Bent piece of brass with decorative wood over the top:

The pins are just to hide the holes as the ball end strings go into "T" shaped slots in the underlying brass.

Marty Jacobson is a whiz at CNC and can possibly help you design a ten string tailpiece.
