    Default Old Wave Instrument Videos

    Hi mandolin community,

I wanted to start this separate forum to post videos of folks who own and love their Old Wave instruments. I was so sad to learn of Bill Bussmann's passing. Our paths never physically crossed, but he sent me a guitar-bodied octave mandolin that he had made I believe as a demo instrument back when I was finishing my last year of grad school in 2016. It continues to be an incredible musical partner and I would love to share it for the community here. If anyone has one of Bill's instruments, please feel free to share!

Thank you, Bill, for your time, talent, and humor! Lots of love to his family.

    Sincerely,

    Davey

Old Wave is the brand name that the late Bill Bussmann put on the instruments he built.

I played an Old Wave at Carter's when I was on the hunt for an upgrade many years ago. If I had had the money, I would've bought that mando, without a doubt; but it was way outside my budget. Bill definitely made some awesome instruments and I'm sad to hear of his passing.

Great idea HarrisonMando and a wonderful performance and great sound from your octave.

Here's the most recent video I have of my Old Wave octave. It's a tune I recorded for the SAW group here on the cafe. Love the octave Bill made me.

Here's a video of Steve Smith playing his Deer Valley on my still-fresh, delightful, beautiful birds-eye maple guitar-bodied octave.
Several good Bill stories to tell, including meeting him for an exchange in an otherwise empty parking lot with a wad of unmarked bills.
    RIP Bill. Thanks.

I was in a contradance band in the early 2000s and got an Old Wave oval hole A style mandolin. I still have the mandolin. I was writing simple fiddle tunes then and wrote this Irish sounding tune. The notes on the page went up and down like a wave so I named the tune Old Wave. It was put together with two other original jigs and became a staple jig set that we played many times over the years. I found the email where I sent it to Bill back in 2003. RIP, Bill.

I apologize for audio quality of the computer mic, and the quality of the player.
Think my all time favorite Bill was when Gibson used the slogan was "Only A Gibson Is Good Enough", his slogan was "Cheaper Than A Mexican Liver Transplant".
