Default Original Orville Gibson mandolin video.

I thought you all might enjoy this video we made about a really cool piece of Gibson history featuring a mandolin built and signed by Orville Gibson himself! We've got it hanging in our shop on loan from the owner, and I can't help but sit and play it from time to time just thinking of the historic nature of it. Very blessed to get to experience pieces like this.

Here are some photos I took when the mandolin first came into our shop on my phone, and some we shot in our studio.

Dave's playing and song choice at the end reminded me of Tone Poems.

Very cool to see the original article. Just goes to show we can never know what will ultimately become of our efforts.

Without this quirky instrument would there have been an F5? Without the F5 would there have been Bluegrass? Without Bluegrass (and especially Bill on the F5) would there have been Rock & Roll? With major changes to these things I would think our culture would be quite different today. It's kind of fun to imagine a counterfactual.

I agree, great article!!! Thank you for posting!!!

    About what would've happened???

There would have still been bluegrass, but you can bet people would have been playing different mandolins.

The music was alive in people; they just would have found other tools to make the music with.

Did the F-5 make Monroe famous? Or did Monroe make the F-5 famous?

    Scruggs, or the Mastertone?

    Flatt, or the Martin?

Other foundational folk, or their instruments?

I tend to think the drive for the music was irrepressible; it had to get out.

Awesome sauce. What a cool instrument, conversation, a homage performance by Dave and the guys. A video with everything. Thanks for sharing.
