    Default 1898 Gibson Mandolin

This was posted from the Chapman shop in the Vintage Instruments section of the forum. Since many members may not visit that section, I really think it deserves to be posted here as well. The video shows Dave Harvey delivering (then playing) an early A style mandolin, hand-made by Orville Gibson.

When they mentioned that it came from a yard sale in Kalamazoo, that resonated with me...years ago Kalamazoo yard sales and flea markets were a gold mine for all manner of Gibsonia...parts and hardware that may have left the factory in an employee's lunch box. Necks and uncompleted instruments. I have even heard about guitar body forms, jigs and fixtures pulled from a dumpster behind the factory.

I've played that one. It really is a sweet instrument, and it sounded (to my ear) better than the high priced new mandos that were in stock at the time!!

I brought my f-2 in to compare to some f-hole mandos, and that elderly gibson was my favorite one I played.
