Hi all,
I recently bought Grey Eagle #6, made in 2003 by Skip Peyre while he was still up in Bristol, Connecticut. I'd like to tell the story of this mandolin and also see if anyone else has one, what they think of it, and if anyone has any more information about skip and his mandolins.
My mandolin, #6, is an F5 made in 2003 that was (according to the guy I bought it from) originally sold to a man who was touring with it for awhile. He was the one that wore an indent into it right below the fretboard because he placed his finger there. In 2005, he sold it to the man I bought it from. Right before it was sold, the strap came off and it fell right on the endpin, cracking down the side. It also has a crack between the bridge and the tailpiece. When the man I bought it from got it in 2005, he had the two cracks and the spot all fixed up. He was intending to get into the mandolin from a country bass/guitar background, but picked here and there and largely left it in its case. Then that leads to me buying it in March 2023 from the man in Boston and bringing it home to Virginia! I've had a wonderful experience with it so far. It's loud and fits nicely in my hand, the narrower neck is perfectly suited to my hand. I feel like we were connected by fate somewhat, largely because it was made in my birth year. It's a special piece and I'd love to know more.
I've had a number of people comment on it at jams in the Richmond area, including one who happened to know Skip while he lived in Richmond, but has since lost contact. There's one other Cafe post about him not coming through on a mandolin, and it mentions his possible move to North Carolina or being in poor health. Does anyone have any further information on him and his other mandolins?
