    Default Kimble F5 #200

To anyone out there looking for an exceptional F5 please check out 2012 Kimble #200 that is currently for sale at The Mandolin Store. I used to own this mandolin and the only reason I still don't is that I moved over to Will's 2-point body design (I currently own a Kimble 2-point mandolin and a Kimble 2-point mandola).

I can honestly say that this is one of the world's truly great mandolins. It's got it all... volume, balance, looks (in spades), playability and tone for days. It is an absolutely, bona-fide musical work of art. You could pay more than twice the price for a F5 from some other big-name builders, but you would not get an instrument like this. So if you're in the market for an instrument of this quality... check it out!

P.S. - The images are one thing... when you actually hold this instrument in your hand and play it you will be amazed. It even comes with a rare and beautiful Pegasus case.

    NFI whatsoever on my part...

Love Will's work. Just wondering why you went from his F style to his 2-point.

Two reasons... firstly, a matter of comfort. For me an A model or a symmetrical two-point design feels more "balanced" when playing... especially standing up. They also weigh less than a F5. Secondly was the fact that an amazing 2-point Kimble mandolin/mandola "pair" (both with one piece backs) became available to me (through The Cafe classifieds) and they proved to be the perfect instruments for what I do musically. I still have them and would be hard pressed to ever let them go.

I do, however, have a new mandolin arriving on Monday... the first oval-hole mandolin I've had in many years. I'm excited!

I've never been a fan of 2 points, except for Wills. Very classy.

Just a quick heads-up here to say that The Mandolin Store has posted a video of this mandolin along with the listing (pre-owned mandolins) on their website.

    Check it out!

Sounds even better than it looks! I have #124 that sounds very much like your former mandolin. I think these mandolins are a bargain when looking at the prices being charged by some comparable builders.

I inquired about that one as well. Wonder how it compares to the new one that's in the classifieds.

A very informative interview. I thought his views on oval hole instruments were interesting, " I build my F-styles to sound like Loars and I build my ovals to sound like Gilchrists".

I also like that he is building what he wants and is successful at it. I personally love his headstock design on the new F-5's.

Thank you to Glassweb for the initial heads up, the great crew at the Mandolin Store, and Will Kimble for building amazing instruments! Will has been super generous over the years at Monroe Mandolin Camp letting me pick on his instruments and it is such a pleasure picking on #200.
