actually the back, sides and neck are all sugar maple... amazing wood! when I chose the one-piece back all I did was choose an unfinished blank - no stain to show the grain. boy was I surprised when Paul sent me an image of the back after staining... wow!

thanks to you all for your supportive comments... though all the credit goes to Paul. can you imagine all the years of solitude and dedication that go into making something like this? unreal...

Well I assume sugar maple can be quilted, no? I can see it is definitely flaked but leans a bit toward quilting in my estimation.

Jim, quilted figure mostly occurs in western bigleaf maple, I have never seen it in sugar maple. A beautiful piece of wood non the less.

Here is a nice example of quilted maple in a Collings mandolin that hit the classifieds this morning...

I recently had the extension of my new Duff "abbreviated" by a fantastic luthier/musician here in town named Devin Champlin. He did an absolutely master full job using a piece of the original binding from the removed piece of extension. When I picked it up a couple of weeks ago I couldn't believe what he had accomplished... it's as though the mandolin was originally made that way by Paul himself. I did find that the original extension was getting in my way... so I am very pleased that I took the plunge and had the transformation done. If I were to do it again I would have probably ordered the mandolin with a fingerboard like Gibson used for its legendary A2Z models... that is with no extension whatsoever.

The mandolin has broken in beautifully thus far and sounds wonderful... plenty of volume, great bass and sustain and crisp mids and trebles. I am so glad to have commissioned this instrument from Paul. Here's a new image taken after the "surgery"...Click image for larger version.

Beautiful mandolin. I have been fortunate to have met Paul a couple of times and he has a band in Perth West Australia called Bluegrass Parkway. They have a great sound and his wife plays Bass very well. Enjoy your new purchase and am also looking forward to hearing it. Cheers

Fantastic looking mandolin Jim... congratulations on your new instrument. I saw/heard you playing that the other day (blues licks thread) and it sounds/looks superb.

I know that we are both dyed-in-the-wool Kimble fanatics, but now we both have our "Aussie builds"! Que la vie est belle...

Took Carl Risner’s Duff for a short but very rewarding test drive Memorial weekend. I think it may have been my favorite Mandolin ever!

Big fan of both Paul and his work here too. Amazing tone and unparalleled attention to detail.
My Fern inlay has some nice color but WOW... that Flower Pot looks like sunrise through stained glass!

Your new mandolin is a stunner, Jim! And it’s been sounding fantastic on the blues lick of the day videos. I love its slightly darker timbre.
