    Default NMD: Andrew Tatnell Mandola

New mandola arrived today. Made by Andrew Tatnell from Australia it is predominantly Australian timbers used - King Billy Pine top, Tiger Myrtle back/sides/neck, Gidgee fingerboard. It has ebony bridge with bone saddle and a K&K pickup. First impressions are that it plays very well and had a very nice and well balanced sound.

That's really beautiful! Andrew's website is really nice too. I've never heard or seen his work before. Thanks for the info and I hope you enjoy your mandola.

The woodgrain, top and back, is just magical.

Yes the wood used is very nice and I like that it is almost all Australian timbers with the King Billy and tiger myrtle being Tasmanian. It plays very nicely and has a nice evenly balanced sound. I'll try some back to back playing with one of my other mandolas today to get a better sense of how the sound differs.

I hadn't seen or heard of him before and he didn't come up when I was searching for mandalas but Iat around the same time I saw a mandolin of his in one of the music shop web pages and I was looking through the Australian builders from the builders list here and came across him. This one kept drawing me back to it and then I saw a video of it being played at the National Folk Festival. So as I like supporting Australian luthiers when I can I decided to go for it and am very happy with the purchase.
