Looks to me like an outcome of poorly managed kiln drying, ie, too quick.

Those are usually caused by the instrument being dropped while in the case. The inertia of the mass of the peghead moving quickly (falling) and then suddenly stopping (hitting the ground) causes a "whiplash" crack. The tug of the strings already puts a preload on the wood so it takes less impact than we might think to cause a crack.
