Thread: Ernesto Vacca Venezia - uncommon maker

Default Ernesto Vacca Venezia - uncommon maker

I came across this one, labelled Ernesto Vacca, Venzezia. Looks Catanese, with Silvestri-shaped headstock and Catania Carmelo style scratchplate. But the tuners are pre-1920 and the instrument in general looks older than pre and post WWII Catanese ones. Jim, Mick, do you have any pics of other Vaccas in your files? Thanks!

That scratchplate is an interesting hybrid between the DeMeglio style and the Catania ones. Curious!

    Thanks, Victor.

I don’t have any examples from Ernesto V in my files.

It is a curious hybrid and I agree w your Catanese hunch.

Could you post a shot of the label?

Did the label have EV in Venezia?

Hard to imagine this mandolin being made there.

Hi Mick. The original post has a readable pic of the label. Yes, has Venezia written there. One never knows. It has a swan on the water on a scratchplate, perhaps an allusion to Venezia in a way. A couple more pics of the label, not as good though. I have another, more modern Vincenzo Vacca pics, perhaps a relative of EV?

    Thanks, Victor.

Can’t quite make out the address: Via Terra St. ——— 4774?

Looks like the label was victim of some aqua alta.

The 1980 VV label looks hand drawn, or perhaps printed that way?

Both Mick and I have none of these Vacca's. That is unusual. I checked my Henley violin book and he is not listed there either. BTW, Victor, in your last post aside from the Calace-inspired Vacca there is another one with a different soundhole (the penultimate photo on that post).

Mick, I can't quite work out the address either. The label is covered with sort of varnish that got fairly dark over time. Modern Vacca's label appears to be hand drawn.
Jim, both D-hole and the round ones are Vincenzo Vacca's from old Italian classifieds. I found just one reference about him in Italian saying he was a Neapolitan luthier. Not a word anywhere about EV though. Found the EV mandolin in Australia and actually bought it out of curiosity.
